Origin of the breed
Similar dogs were bred in the early 17th century for the needs of indigenous Yakut peoples. Their homeland is the Nizhnekolymskiy district of Yakutia. Dogs participated in the hunt for deer, and also harnessed to the sleigh. The first person from outside who showed interest in the Yakut husky was the researcher Jochelson, who started his work in the early 19th century.
Unfortunately, at some point the breed was on the verge of extinction, but thanks to Vladimir Dyachkov and Herman Arbugaev, it was restored in the late 20th century. A few years later, the Yakut Laika received recognition from the RKF, then the breed standard was approved. This opened the way for them to various exhibitions and sporting events, where dogs could show their abilities well.
Description of breed Yakut husky
Laika from Yakutia is a strong, muscular animal with a hulled body, but at the same time compact, with high paws. Externally, the dog of this breed looks quite massive, but without the "dampness" in the complexion. The representatives of the breed clearly trace their sex - males larger, broad and rickety individuals. Bitches also have a mild expression of muzzle. However, obstinacy and freedom-loving are traits that do not depend on sex of husky.
The growth of males can be from 55 to 59 cm, the female does not exceed 57 cm. The body weight of dogs is 20-23 kg. But when assessing dogs more attention is paid to their proportions, rather than to individual qualities. Unconcerned people can confuse Yakut husky with husky or malamute, but professionals note a number of differences - the Yakuts have a greater physical strength, they do not have the same incision as the Husky, and the tail is differently placed.
The Husky is a breed intended for driving, and the Yakut Laika, although used for these purposes, is still more of a hunting breed. In the standard, the following description of the breed representatives is indicated:
- Head . Large size, with a harmonious post, a broad forehead and a round skull, has the form of a wedge. The transition from the frontal area to the muzzle is well expressed, but it can not be called sharp. Cheekbones are moderately pronounced, the area under the eyes is clearly filled, but without gravity. The lips are medium stretched, not thin, but also not fleshy, pigmented with the same color as the nose. The lobe is wide, large, colored black or brown. Eyes of medium size, almond-shaped, expressive, with tightly fitting eyelids, look interested, attentive. Iris brown or blue hue. the standard allows for disagreement - heterochromia. The auricles are large, stiff, triangular in shape, the tips are rounded.
- Torso . The Yakut Laika is composed proportionally, characterized by a strong, well-built body. Neck long, thick, well developed. The thorax has a good volume, length and depth, ribs of round shape. The withers can be called massive, the back is wide and strong, the waist is shortened. Croup is powerful, with medium-length spatula and muscular shoulders.
- Extremities . Settled in parallel, have a pronounced musculature. Hips of decent width, hock joints are large, the metatarsus are vertical. The brushes are large, but in front of the forelimbs they are slightly inferior in size, tightly assembled, with long fingers and well-developed pads, the wool cover grows abundantly between the fingers.
- The tail . This part of the dog's body is not too long, rather thick, thrown over the animal's back or pressed against one of the hips. There are several forms of the tail of the Yakut laika, which are allowed - a full, double ring or a tight semicircle.
Yakut husky, due to their specificity and habitat, have very thick hair with a thick undercoat layer. The front hair is shiny, straight. If you touch, you can feel that it is quite rude. Dogs have abundant feathers in the limbs, a smart mane and a fluffy tail.
To vices include a wavy or overly soft coat, to disadvantages - wool with a small density or fuzzy. The standard specifies that the Yakut husky should have a spotted color:
- with black and white and white-black hair;
- a combination of gray-white, white-gray;
- Black and white with marks of a red tinge;
- with black hair and spots of red color;
- red-white and white-red.
All monophonic colors are not allowed, except for the white color of the coat.
The nature of Yakut dogs
Like all the likes, "Yakuts" differ in freedom and independence, but these dogs are very loyal to their master. Among the main character traits can be noted curiosity, so if you let the pet walk without a leash, the dog can escape to a decent distance in search of something new and unknown.
From Yakut laikas are obtained good watchmen, who will not be able to express aggression over trifles. As for hunting, here they excel themselves.
Dogs of this breed can not remain alone for a long time, they are not averse to getting a share of attention from family members, are quite sociable and find a common language with younger family members. It is not recommended to leave such a pet for a long time alone, and if the dog is offended, it will be acutely experienced.
Laiki - dogs are proud, they will not demand attention, cringe or behave impudently. They are keenly aware of injustice and do not tolerate it even from their beloved host. Such a pet possesses fearlessness, ingenuity, he is able to independently assess the current situation and decide how to act. But, despite these qualities, it is important that the owner in any case remain the leader.
Laika can be started by a family, in which there are already other dogs. It is capable of showing dominant qualities, but if there is an animal that will show itself better, stronger and smarter, then the Yakut will obey and take it for the leader of the pack.
Such a pet needs regular physical activity, is very playful. If the dog is purchased for hunting, the owner should be aware that the huskies do not hunt for themselves, they only do their job, making it easier for the hunter. And if a person is in danger, the dog, without hesitation, will rush to the rescue, even if he himself is in danger of dying.
Features of training "Yakuts"
Before you begin to train your four-legged friend, the owner should understand that training huskies is not just the mastery of a number of skills by the dog, but an educational process that instills in the animal the rules of behavior and establishes contact between the animal and the person.
If the owner does not have experience with the likes, it is recommended to seek professional help. Assimilation of the initial course under the guidance of a cynologist will be enough that in the future the owner does not have problems with the training and education of the northern dog.
During training, it is important to consider the independent thinking of the pet. Laika is a pretty obedient dog, however, she is not inclined to blindly perform commands, trying to find a way out by herself. But with proper training you can achieve good results. If the dog fully trusts the owner, he will not doubt the correctness of his decision.
Another feature of the nature of all the Laikas, which must be taken into account in the upbringing - is touchiness. You can not be rude, use physical punishment and negligence, only positive techniques are welcome.
How to take care of a pet and take care of his health?
Like most aboriginal northern dogs, the Yakuts are lucky owners of excellent health. They are excellent at tolerating low temperatures, they differ in unpretentiousness, and this applies to both care and nutrition. But the owners should know that huskies do not feel too good in the heat.
Dogs of this breed molt 1-2 times a year, and during these periods it is recommended to scratch the pet more often, relieving it of dead hairs and excluding the possibility of rolling the wool into coils. In the rest of the time this procedure is not recommended to huskam, of course, if the pet is not to participate in exhibition events.
You can swim a dog 1-2 times a year, in winter, their wool is cleaned with snow. As for other hygiene procedures, that everything is standard here:
- cleaning of eyes;
- cleansing from the dirt of the auricles;
- care of the oral cavity.
On average, such manipulations are carried out once in 3-4 days.
As already noted, "Yakuts" have excellent health, however, nevertheless there are a number of diseases to which they are inclined:
- malignant formations in the stomach;
- weakening of the pigmentation of the nose (called "snow nose");
- eye diseases, which are caused by genetic predisposition;
- dysplasia of large joints.
Feeding the Yakut husky
In natural harsh conditions, dogs cook a fat dish consisting of cereals, meat, broth, and fat is also added. In a city where the climate is softer, and the pet gets less load, the food for the dog should be easier.
The basis of the diet is meat, it is given in both boiled and raw form. In the menu, you must include fish - river and sea. The micronutrients included in its composition are very important for the growth and development of the animal.
In order to diversify the diet of the pet, it can be given sour-milk products that must be fresh and not contain additional additives - sugar, dyes and other. In the dish of the dog you can add vegetable oil, raw yolk, chopped greens. Delicacies can be fresh vegetables and fruits.
Dry production feeds can be given to Yakut husky, but they should not be the only food of the dog. In certain periods, dogs are recommended to give vitamin and mineral top dressing, however, it is better if they are appointed by a veterinarian.
Conditions for keeping a dog
Best of all, the husky feel in regions with a cold climate. They are not suitable for apartment maintenance, as in summer the dog will suffer from heat. It is recommended to equip a dog with a street cage, and the dog needs a booth, but it is not necessary to insulate it. In addition, the Yakut husky is distinguished by "talkativeness", and this again speaks against keeping such a pet in the apartment.
It does not matter if a pet lives in the house or in an enclosure, he needs regular walks, active classes and joint games. Also, do not keep the dog constantly in the cage, it is desirable that he had the opportunity to run around the local area. But it is worth remembering the freedom of love of the Laikas, the fence should be high enough and exclude the possibility of undermining.
In addition, the benefit of the dog will go hunting trips, as well as training and participation in sports competitions. And we are talking not only about the physical form, but also a good emotional mood. Boredom and idleness will not benefit such a four-footed friend.

Where is it better to buy a puppy
All breeds of indigenous northern breeds have some features that future owners deserve to know before a fluffy lump crosses the threshold of the house. But, if the family council still made a decision - the Yakut husky in the house to be, then you should look for a place where you can buy a pet.
First of all, experts are negative about the idea of acquiring puppies on the bird market or from casual breeders. Of course, here the cost of kids is much lower than in nurseries or breeders with good reputation and extensive experience, but the risks of various kinds are much higher. For example, in these cases, you can buy a mestizo husky or, worse, a puppy with diseases, including genetic abnormalities or unstable psyche.
Honest owners of nurseries and breeders will not offer babies younger than 2-2.5 months. It is this age that is suitable for taking the pet home. It is important to get acquainted with the available documents - pedigree, passport, notes about vaccinations.
When inspecting the puppy, you should pay attention to its appearance and activity. He must be active, moderately well-fed - not fat, but not thin. If there is an opportunity to get acquainted with the parents of the offspring, then you should not miss it.
Yakut husky is still a fairly rare breed, so far from every city there are nurseries engaged in their breeding. The first of them appeared in the homeland of dogs - in Yakutsk, the rest literally in the last couple of years.
The cost of puppies with a pedigree varies from 10,000 to 30,000 rubles. If you need a companion dog, then you can pay attention to the children of the pet class, but for exhibitions it is better to take a puppy that fully meets the standard requirements. A pet for hunting should be acquired from working parents who have all the necessary skills that they pass on to their offspring.
Buying a puppy of the Yakut Laika, we should not forget that this is not a decorative dog, but a dog intended for work that requires a serious approach to teaching and upbringing.
