It is generally believed that the mastino neapolitano originated from the mastiff, which, in turn, was a descendant of the immense molosses that had died out today. These ferocious, intimidating by their very appearance, dogs were the fighting unit in Xerxes' army back in the 5th century. BC. e.
One of the breeds that occurred from the formidable Molossians was called the mastiff from massivius (large, massive). According to another version, mastino is named from masuetinus, which means "tamed" or "submissive". On ancient Assyrian bas-reliefs near the soldiers are depicted huge mastiff-like dogs, encased in armor.
In the war against the Persians, Alexander of Macedon used about 50 ferocious dogs, outwardly similar to the Neapolitan mastiff. But back in the 1st c. BC. e. The Britons used combat prapastifof in battles against the Roman conquerors. Later, huge dogs were kept for the protection of livestock, property, hunting. Chaotic crossing and lack of selection would have led the mastino to extinction, just like his ancestor, had it not been for Pietro Scanciani, an artist and cynologist, who lived in the suburbs of Rome.
In the middle of the twentieth century. Pietro Scagniani at the exhibition saw one of the 8 mastinos presented in an out-of-competition show. Within 3 years Scanciani received an exemplary male, from which the standards of the breed were copied. They were approved in 1949, but since the standard was adopted without checking physical and performance characteristics, it was improved for a long time, and the breed was improved. The final version was adopted at the end of the twentieth century.
Description of breed mastino neapolitano
Neapolitan is one of the biggest dogs. In the top rating, he takes 12th place, behind Alabai, divers, Pyrenean, English, Spanish and Tibetan mastiffs, the Great Dane. Powerful wide skeleton is covered with strong musculature.
The dog is well built, but since it weighs heavily (male 60-70 kg, female 50-60 kg) and a considerable size (height at the withers in males is 65-75 cm, and in bitches 60-68 cm), somewhat awkward, but has the plasticity of a large cat:
- The body is sturdy, stocky, somewhat elongated. Its length is 10% larger than the height at the withers.
- Thick loose skin forms characteristic folds not only on the head of the dog, but also throughout the body, which speaks of the dog's fighting life. Under the "hanging" skin rolling strong relief muscles roll.
- From the protruding withers, the line of the back smoothly goes down and rises to the waist. The broad back ends in a thick tail near the base and a tail that approaches the end. It is saber-like folded, sometimes it is cut by 1/3.
- The skull is massive, has a wide facial part in the area of the cheekbones, with a high, broad forehead, covered with folds. The transition to the nose is expressed. On the sides of the broad nose and lower edge of the eye, the folds of the skin hang down, merging with the plumb line at the bottom of the neck. They are parallel and well expressed.
- Lips are large, fleshy. The outer corners are open and visible mucous. Jaws strong, well developed, wide with a full set of white, even teeth. Both scissor and clamp-like clamping are allowed.
- The eyes are deeply planted and partially hidden by folds, which makes the mastone look sad. Their color is somewhat darker than the color of the coat.
- The ears are hanging, because of the large size of the skull, seem small. The auricle is thick, high set, the dangling edge is snug against the side surface of the cheeks. Can be stopped.
- The neck is thick, short, covered with folds of the skin. The suspension is pronounced, double, but not excessive. The belly is picked up, a hanging is required from below the trunk.
- The extremities are powerful, equipped with strong muscles, even, parallel to each other. The length of the shoulder and forearm of the front paws is practically the same. Hind legs are provided with long hock joints. At the foot of the hind paw, the fingers should be removed.
The movements of the mastino are somewhat slow, similar to the footsteps of a large lion. When moving by a trot, the dog strongly repels its hind legs and throws it out in front of the front. Less often the mastino can move with an amble and very rarely goes galloping.
The short coat is snug against the skin, which is the same throughout the body. The bitch is soft, gives a touch of velvety when touched. In males, it's tough. Color varied - gray, dark gray, gray-fawn (Isabella), blue, black, mahogany or yellow-brown.
On the general background, vertical bands of a darker color are noted, the so-called tigrovins. They are mandatory. Small white spots on the chest and at the base of the fingers are allowed.
The nature of the pet
A lot has been written about the character of the Neapolitan. Expressive, brief, capacious it was described by the Italian Terre, who lived in the XIX century. He compared this powerful handsome with Hercules, noting his strength and nobility. But, despite the fearsome appearance, the mastino possesses immense devotion to the master and the readiness to protect him even at the cost of his life.
In the ruins of Pompeii, scientists found material confirmation of this - filling the voids in the lava with gypsum, they received casts of bodies of the inhabitants of the deceased city. One of these casts was a huge mastino, which with his body protected his small master from a stream of lava and hot ash. A collar with an engraving was found nearby. It was learned from her that the bitch named Delta had already saved her master Severinus from a pack of wolves.
Mastino neapolitano rely not only on their strength. Owners and breeders note the mind of these dogs, a rare sensitivity and "consonance" to the mood of the owner. Mastino - the perfect guard and defender, but, nevertheless, he will never attack the enemy weaker than himself or not showing aggression.
The dog is somewhat lazy, he likes to luxuriate in the house on his stove, but will also willingly go around the house to check if everything is all right. He likes to be paid attention, caressed. Without attention, the dog becomes gloomy and depressed. The past centuries, in close contact with man, formed the need for his presence in the life of Mastino. Left for a long time alone, the dog begins to howl loudly or riot.
Mastino from an early age requires socialization. Without the skills to communicate with humans and animals, a dog can grow aggressive or shy. Proper upbringing will emphasize and develop the best traits of Neapolitan character - fearlessness, friendliness, patience, loyalty, restraint.
Mastino is always on the alert. He vigilantly watches the host's interlocutor and does not allow the invasion of his comfort zone, conversations on high tones, sharp gestures. He "closes" his body owner, demanding to maintain distance and peace. Mastino does not show jealousy and applies equally to all family members. He does not like when during the walk his family breaks up and tries to get everyone together to guard and observe.
The sixth sense inherent in the dogs of this breed, there are legends. Mastino perfectly feels who treats the hosts in a kind way, and who is the enemy and a bad person. Intentions and attitudes can not be hidden from the insightful mastino. Even a puppy feels it. Some breeders give the puppy only to the one whom he himself chose, which further strengthens the contact between the dog and his guardian.
The hardness of the character and the pride of the mastino do not facilitate his training. He does not tolerate rudeness and aggression. A dog has a good memory and natural mind, if you act patiently and confidently, then he quickly learns. Teams given in a firm tone will do more good than punishments.
They perfectly perceive and understand the commands, but they are not in a hurry to fulfill them, therefore it is considered that the learning ability of mastino is average. Dogs do not like monotonous repetition of exercises. He likes unhurried walks with the host rather than running around and running teams.
Mastino is touchy and injured, having a good memory, he remembers the image of the offender for a long time, so it is easy enough to slap a newspaper or a raised voice so that the dog understands what he did wrong.
The cynologists insist that the mastino is not so much trained as is brought up. And education should be dealt with from early childhood - a huge uncontrolled dog can pose a serious threat. Attacking mastino can not be stopped even by a strong man.
Teams should be brief, understandable and must be followed, otherwise the dog will ignore them. Some owners train Mastino attack, giving command with the help of innocent words inserted into the conversation, or imperceptible touch to the body of the animal. Fostering ferocity in Mastino threatens to get a ruthless dangerous creature instead of an intelligent guard.
In training mastino, all members of the family should adhere to unanimity. It is unacceptable that the requirements imposed by one person are ignored or abolished by another. You can not prohibit a dog barking - this is one of the elements of warning about the danger and evidence of performance of official duties.
Mastino can not be degraded by content on the chain. From this the character of the dog spoils. If there is no possibility to place a dog in a house or apartment, then it is not worthwhile to start it.
Health & Care
Like most representatives of large breeds, Mastino is not a long-liver. Characteristic features of appearance and anatomy are caused by the following diseases:
- hip dysplasia;
- ear diseases;
- food and atopic allergy;
- heart failure;
- metabolic disease;
- dermatitis, demodectic, pyoderma;
- retinal atrophy.
Since the dog lives in an apartment or a house, care of it is minimal. Smooth short fur mastino does not need grooming. It is enough to comb the dog 1-2 times a week with a special brush made of natural bristles.
To bathe a dog is necessary only at strong pollution, as violation of a natural fatty grease will lead to dandruff, thinning and weakening of wool, a risk of development of skin diseases. Puppies should only be washed after a year.
Very carefully it is necessary to monitor the health of the ears, especially if they are not cropped. Clean them once every 2-3 days. You need to look after the teeth and eyes of mastino, they need cleaning and, if necessary, treatment. At the dog during food, excitement or in anticipation of food, saliva can be allocated, which must be wiped, so that maceration of the folds does not occur. Periodically folds should be checked as they accumulate dust, sweat, particles of food, which leads to inflammation and the appearance of dermatoses.
To maintain physical fitness and prevent obesity, a dog should walk for at least 2 hours. Natural curiosity should be satisfied with visiting special places of the paddock, where the dog can communicate with other dogs, run, play. Huge sizes and short hair can lead to overheating of the mastino, so in the hot season, walks should be postponed for a time with a lower temperature - morning or evening.
Feeding and keeping the dog
Feeding is facilitated if the master of the mastino gives him dry food. There is no need for additional administration of mineral-vitamin supplements, calculation and compilation of a diet. Moreover, the dog is not very tidy during the meal, and the dry pellets of the feed spoil the apartment less and do not contaminate the dog's face.
The amount of feed and frequency of feeding depends on the age of the dog. An adult dog is enough to feed once a day. Proteins are necessary for the formation of muscle mass, so with natural feeding in the diet of Mastino, meat and by-products (40%) are the most.
Despite good digestion, it is recommended to exclude rice, poultry meat and bones from the diet. But some breeders are advised to include in the menu meat and insides of the ostrich, rich in glucosamines and easily digestible.
In food, additives with calcium should be added to prevent diseases of the musculoskeletal system and vitamins, especially in the spring-winter period. Experienced breeders recommend adding bread and cereal to the ration as a source of carbohydrates. Fats are provided by the introduction of vegetable oil.
Mastino puppies are recommended for the growth and correct formation of the skeleton type Eukanuba Dog Breeder Puppy Large Breeds with a balanced composition and rich content of phosphorus and calcium for the mineralization of bones. Feed for puppies of large and giant breeds provides uniform growth, prevents obesity, provides optimal mental and physical development.
