History of the origin of the breed
It is known that these dogs belong to the ancient breeds, and the found references to the livery are from the period of Ancient Rome and even earlier period. True, it has not been possible to find out exactly where these dogs originated, but according to two common versions they could have come from Greece or Turkey, Egypt or the Persian state.
Its name - an Italian Greyhound or Italian Greyhound dog received because the breed was very popular among the aristocrats of Italy during the Renaissance. From this country, she first came to the territory of England. The ancestors of the greyhounds were also greyhounds, but larger dogs. They were popular with Greeks and Romans, as evidenced by their images on art objects. It is not known exactly when, but images began to appear and smaller greyhounds.
How small dogs began to appear, and for what purpose they were taken out, is still unclear. There is an opinion that they were used as hunters for small game, such as rabbits, or rodent pests. But also that the little greyhounds were exclusively companions, the idea is not ruled out, as there are no confirmations of the remaining theories. There is also no real evidence of whether the small greyhounds are the direct ancestors of the greyhounds, but scientists are inclined towards this version.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, dogs became so popular that they could be found in almost any European country. Since the only greyhounds at that time were greyhounds, the greyhound also began to be called, but with the addition - Italian. This led to the erroneous opinion that the greyhounds are dwarfish greyhounds, but in fact they have nothing to do with them. In other countries, they began to be called Levriero (in translation from the Italian greyhound).
A small part of this breed was used for hunting, but most dogs were companions. Only in the 17th century began to appear tribal books, and England's breeders began to record in them data about their dogs. In the middle of the 19th century, four-legged exhibitions were held everywhere, these events became very popular. This fact led to the fact that the breeders took up standardization of their pets, this fate did not pass around and the greyhounds.
Thanks to the selection work, these dogs acquired a more elegant appearance and immediately attracted universal attention at the exhibitions. However, breeders are fond of miniaturization of the breed, which negatively affects its representatives. They lose their proportionality and often suffer from defects. As a result, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries a club of this breed was formed, the main task of which was the return of the original species to the lewrets and the elimination of breeding harm.
Like other breeds, World Wars negatively affected, and on miniature greyhounds. Their population has declined critically, and in England it has almost disappeared. But the case is saved by American felinologists, since the Lionettes have long been adopted in the States. Then there began to appear clubs, the main purpose of which was the revival of the breed. At that time the breeders managed not only to restore the Italian greyhounds, but also to promote their spread throughout the world.
Today, the lioness is an amazing little companion, pleasing and entertaining of its owners.

The nature of the little greyhounds
Tenderness and humility are the main characteristics of the greyhounds. They are distinguished by exclusive devotion, they are able to listen attentively and faithfully to their master. They do not have destructive behavior, but it can happen if the dog is bored, subject to physical violence or gets into stressful situations.
They are distinguished by playfulness and developed intelligence, these are important qualities for excellent family companions. In dealing with the Lions, you can not use stiffness, as they can be very upset about this. Miniature greyhounds feel good in a relaxed family atmosphere, devoid of tension and clarification of relationships. They feel the mood of their owners. If the greyhound got into a not very comfortable situation, then it is important to pat and encourage her.
These Italian dogs are quite shy and are irritable if they are scared. They can also worry and be embarrassed. This can create some difficulties with their content. The amazing quality of the levreets - running, they easily develop incredible speed. They can easily jump onto the fence, jump off any elevations, which is very traumatic for their thin limbs.
Leverets are in poor contact with representatives of large breeds, since they have no protection from them. But with their own kind they get along fine, they can be kept in pairs. But living together with cats and other small pets is not recommended, as they scare other animals with their barking. The same applies to young children. It is not so easy to keep a greyhound, but if certain rules are followed, she can be an excellent member of the family, albeit with her own characteristics.

How to care for a greyhound
The advantage of levreets is the absence of an unpleasant odor. They also very little molt . Bathe these dogs only if necessary, using detergents for smooth-haired rocks. Some owners simply wipe their pets with a damp cloth. It will only be necessary to wash the pet's paw after each paddock. You do not need to comb the greyhounds.
The ears should be inspected regularly, but they should be cleaned only if there is considerable contamination. It is best to use special lotions. Eyes are not problematic in care, as they are enough to wipe a piece of cotton wool or a disc from the outer corner of the eye to the inside. But this is done only when necessary.
But the teeth should be cleaned regularly, for this purpose it is necessary to purchase special means in the veterinary pharmacy. The Italian greyhounds are very active, so the procedure for cutting claws in the summer is not worthwhile, their stitching takes place naturally. And in the winter it is extremely necessary.
The best food for any dog is a special, well-balanced diet. However, today the producers do not produce specially adapted food for levreets.
The peculiarity of dogs of this breed is that, for all their subtlety and elegance, they endure incredible physical stress. So it's worth paying much attention to feeding your pet. The basis of the diet should be the meat portion - meat with a low fat content and quality by-products. Croup in the diet is needed, but in small quantities. Saturate with useful substances their diet will not be difficult, since they do not refuse fruits, berries, vegetables. But to forget about additional vitamin-mineral supplements is not worth it.
Do not underestimate the appetite of the greyhounds, given their mobility, they eat quite a lot. But they burn all calories they consume naturally. Since levretki are not adapted to cold weather conditions and precipitation, owners often accustom their pets to a home toilet (a tray with a filler).
Long walks are possible only in sunny, windless weather. The wind does not like the lefties very much, and they try to close it with their paws.
