The origin of the breed

If we talk about the ancestors of the Keeshond, they did not appear yesterday. There is confirmed evidence that a large group of spitz-like dogs originated from one of the lines of peat Spitz - medium-sized, strong and fearless animals.

Keeshond

Data on the same type of livestock date back to the 16-17 centuries. Then dogs began to appear in different territories with the same appearance, but different colors. For example, on the lands of modern Germany and Poland, and then it was Pomerania, two types of Spitz were common - white large sizes and medium with red color.

Gray and tan Spitz (this color was called the wolf) of medium size were used as guards and Dutch and German breeders were actively involved in their breeding. Hence the two names of the breed - German Wolfspitz and Keeshond, the second name of the dog received in Holland.

The early members of the breed did not have such an attractive appearance as the modern doggie. Yes, and other characteristics, they are not particularly famous, for example, a strong grip, fast running and other working qualities. The Keeshondas were always “middling”, but they coped well with the work of the guards, notifying the whole neighborhood of the invasion of strangers, herded cattle and were excellent companions.

Due to the fact that the dog handlers were not particularly interested in this breed and did not make high-breed animals from dogs, the keeskhond puppies were accessible to everyone, and thanks to this they became widespread. Then people with a small income did not allow themselves to keep dogs just like that, for the sake of communication, and even more so, to fulfill all the whims of pets. Therefore, a rather spartan habitat conditions and natural selection turned the representatives of this breed into universal undemanding in keeping dogs.

So, not much standing out, the spitz lived side by side with a man, until they still attracted the attention of breeders. They were indirectly implicated in the Dutch Revolution, which began in 1568 and lasted for more than a decade, since the instigator of the first uprising in the pets had a spitz named Gez. Subsequently, this dog became a symbol of the revolutionary movement, as the rebel Cornelius often appeared at various kinds of mass gatherings with his favorite.

Keeshond character

The participants of the movement received the name "Geza", which translated sounded like half-breeds or mongrels. The revolution failed, and an order came from the authorities to destroy everything connected with the riots. Purges touched and Spitz.

But, fortunately, this was not possible to accomplish completely, and at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries the first breed club appeared in Germany, whose members did a tremendous job and classified Spitz-dogs from various territories.

In 1899, however, a description of the representatives of the breeds, approved by world clubs, appeared and the rules for breeding were drawn up. From this year, keeshond is officially recognized, although in Germany it is still referred to as Wolfspitz.

There are international rules according to which a breed can have only one patronizing state. But the Cynological International Association combines all varieties of Spitz into a single standard in which they differ in height. There is another description of keeshond dogs, but already in the American Kennel Club.

Representatives of the breed have not only a unique, spectacular appearance, but also sufficiently developed intellectual abilities. Having the appearance of a shaggy toy, dogs are well developed and physically, they are very agile and tireless.

Keeskhonda regular participants of various exhibitions and enjoy it wildly popular, but also ordinary amateur dog lovers give them increased attention and love. That, in general, is not surprising, with such an attractive appearance and appeasable character.

But the German Wolfspitz gets a slightly different upbringing. In Germany, these dogs are used as watchmen, so they take special courses that give skills to protect property and family. Here the dogs learn not to allow outsiders until the owner allows it. What does this mean? And the fact that representatives of this breed have a rather flexible character, and it depends only on the owner which pet will receive upbringing and skills.

Keeshond Care

The Wolfshpitz Keeshond is a fairly versatile dog that is suitable for both street and apartment housing. Moreover, the representatives of the breed themselves can feel comfortable in any conditions.

  1. The main point in the care is visible to the naked eye - it is a long, fluffy, equipped with a rich undercoat, wool. Pet will have to comb at least once a week, and ideally - every day, using a special brush with long metal teeth. In the period of seasonal molting (spring and autumn), one more tool is needed - Pukhoderka, and the procedure will have to be performed every day. Again, it is worth recalling that, according to the approved standard, the keeshond should not be trimmed, it is necessary that the dog look as natural as possible.
  2. Dogs are clean, so they are contaminated rarely and do not require frequent washing . In some cases, the removal of dirt can be done with a brush, or use a dry detergent . But frequent bathing can harm the pet, breaking the top layer of skin and, as a result, the hair structure.
  3. Both ears and eyes of the pet, which should be inspected 1-2 times a week, need regular care. For washing the eyes, you can use chamomile decoction. Ears enough to wipe with a damp swab dipped in water or antiseptic. Claws trimmed with keeshondam once a month.
