Description and characteristics of the transponder

A transponder is a microscopic device that contains a unique animal code. The size of the transponder used for chipping dogs and other pets, is 13 mm in length and 2 mm in diameter. The tiny device does not interfere with the life of the pet and does not cause discomfort when moving or at rest.

The device consists of:

  • receiver;
  • transmitter;
  • multi-turn antenna;
  • memory block with a capacity of at least 96 bits;
  • protective capsule of biologically inert glass.

The microchip is programmed upon release by the manufacturing company. A 15-digit code is entered into the transponder memory. The first three digits are the country code corresponding to the ISO 3166 standard. For example, Russia is assigned the code 643, Ukraine - 804, and so on. The next 4 characters are the code of the company that issued the microchip. This is followed by 8 digits - an individual code that cannot be changed. chipping dogs

A large number of options for combinations of numbers excludes selection. The code is entered into the Unified National Base, which contains comprehensive information about the dog - the nickname, breed, age, color, contact phone numbers of the owner and the address of his residence. The transponder implanted in the dog fully complies with the ISO standard, which makes it possible to read the code in any country with a scanner.

The range of the transponder for small pets is 12-20 mm - this is the distance that you need to bring the scanner to read the code. Type of microchip - Read only (RO). This device does not provide for a change in the code, so it is used in the labeling of pets.

The kit, in addition to the transponder, includes a disposable special syringe with which the device is inserted under the dog's skin and an ampoule with liquid that facilitates the insertion and assimilation of the chip. Transponders are supplied to Russia, Ukraine, Belarus by the German company Bayer AG.

How is chipping carried out

Chipping dogs is carried out in veterinary clinics or canine centers. A puppy that is injected with a microchip must be at least 1 month old. Special training of the dog before the procedure is not required. Long-haired breeds of the chip is introduced into the area of the left shoulder blade or withers. In this case, the wool is moved apart, the skin at the injection site is treated with hydrogen peroxide or another disinfectant solution.

For hairless or short-haired breeds of dogs, a transponder is inserted into the inner part of the thigh. Before the procedure, check the performance of the chip, remove it from the sterile packaging and placed in a syringe. The puncture site is treated with alcohol. The whole procedure is painless, performed without anesthesia. Fluid allows you to enter the transponder without injury to the tissue.

Unlike previously applied marking or tattooing, chipping is a more humane and safer method. After the injection of the dog can not bathe or comb for several days. If the animal tries to reach the injection site, you can protect this area by restricting access with a plastic collar.

The glass from which the body of the chip is made does not cause an allergic reaction, it is not rejected by the body. The shape and material of the transponder prevents it from migrating in the body of the animal and rapidly growing into tissues.

The procedure of chipping dogs is not as widespread in the CIS as in Europe, so there is no such service everywhere. But in large cities you can chip your pet not only in a veterinary clinic. On call, the doctor can come to the house. The simplicity and safety of the operation allows you to chip the pet in the usual conditions for it.

Why do you need chipping

In the past, chipping was used to mark rare, expensive, elite animals and birds to protect them from theft. Today, the microchip helps:

  • determine the owner of the lost animal;
  • prove ownership of the dog;
  • When buying an elite breed puppy, the chip data will help to ensure that the puppy is the one that was selected;
  • to prevent the substitution of animals at international competitions and exhibitions.

Chipping dogs and other pets is not regulated by law and is a voluntary procedure. However, if the owner of the dog with his pet crosses the borders of the EU countries, the presence of a chip is mandatory. This requirement is stipulated by the special Regulation of the Council of Europe and the European Parliament of the European Union No. 998/2003 (starting from 26. 05.2003).

The identification of animals for participation in exhibitions from 01/01/2010 is carried out only if there is a transponder registered in the international database. Now breeders must indicate the individual parents' code in the puppy pedigree certificate. Many contests and exhibitions do not allow animals that do not have an implanted identifier and the corresponding questionnaire in the database to participate in the contest. chipping dogs on a large background

As a rule, lost animals go to volunteers, to shelters or just to good people. To find the owners of the lost dog, it is enough to check the presence of a chip in the vet clinic and install the code. In each country there is a single database of animals that are microchipped, which is part of an international search engine. The registration card will contain the data needed to find the owner and the institution that implanted the chip.

In addition, in the column “Notes of the owner” there is additional information that the owner deemed necessary to indicate. The column "Notes of the vetworker" provides information about the state of health, vaccinations, possible allergic reactions, etc. Such information helps when changing doctors, for example, when moving, traveling. After all, all the necessary information can be obtained quickly, which in a certain situation can save the life of a dog.

What should the owner know about chipping?

When conducting pet chipping, the owner should know what to look for. It should be sure to make sure that the chip introduced to the dog conforms to the international standards ISO 11784 and 11785, otherwise the pet will not be taken abroad.

If the owner of the kennel sells already chipped puppies, then it is necessary to check whether the information about the dog has been entered into the Common Base. The same information is required when chipping in the clinic. If the institution enters the code only in the local or individual database, then identification will not be possible.

When chipping a pet, the owner must fill out a questionnaire, the data from which will be posted by the employee of the veterinary clinic in the database. A special barcode is pasted into the dog's veterinary passport, which corresponds to the microchip data. An identification card is issued to the hands of the owner of the dog, which serves as a legal document to confirm in court the rights to a particular animal. The owner must check whether the data is entered into the animal-ID system, whether there are any errors in the questionnaire.

A week after chipping, the owner of the dog should check whether there is any information in the international and national bases, whether it is correct. Often, owners, knowing that a transponder is implanted in a pet, are shocked when, at the border crossing, for example, the customs veterinary service does not detect an electronic dog passport.

If the record could not be found, the owner can make a request, certify it in a veterinary clinic, provide a microchip for checking the code, and send the application by mail for registration. The same procedure is provided when changing contacts. Electronic identification is one of the points of the necessary documents for exporting a dog abroad to the countries of the European Union, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, etc.

When choosing a microchip, you should make sure that it complies with ISO standards, otherwise there may be problems with reading the code. While there are no universal scanners and some transponders can not be considered.

Chipped dog search

If a chipped dog is lost, stolen or replaced, you can find your pet owner using the Unified Chiped Animal Database.

The site has a virtual message board with information on the search for missing pets. The owner must fill in the advertisement, according to the sample, and it will immediately be placed on the page “Animals in search”, and the mark about the disappearance of the pet - in the dog's electronic passport card. black and white dog chipping

After 24 hours, the search information will be available to all Internet search engines. Now, if the kidnappers try to take the dog out of the state or go to the veterinary clinic, dog society, then when you scan the chip and enter the code to check it you will see that this dog is wanted.

The advantages of chipping dogs

Unlike the stigma, transponder is not a privilege of dogs with pedigree. At the request of the owner, he can be transplanted to any dog. Chipping has its advantages:

  • over time, the stigma may become imperceptible under the coat, the tattoo may fade, and the chip will always provide undistorted information;
  • Chipping is not traumatic, painless, unlike common methods of labeling;
  • individual code cannot be changed;
  • dog's electronic passport is always with her;
  • information stored in the database will facilitate the recovery of lost documents;
  • Since 2011, the presence of an electronic identifier is mandatory in the European Union and many countries. Even with properly executed documents, the lack of a chip is a reason not to let the animal out of the state;
  • the transponder facilitates the search for the missing animal;
  • the presence of the transponder will prevent the substitution of the pet;
  • the information entered in the special card, barcode and microchip code allows to prove the right of ownership in court;
  • If necessary, a veterinarian anywhere in the world, with a scanner and computer, can get comprehensive information about the health of the dog, vaccinations and individual characteristics.

The convenience and safety of the procedure, low cost and ease of identification have made the chipping procedure popular and popular. If 20 years ago they knew about transponders only abroad, and expensive instruments were used only for marking elite, rare and expensive fauna representatives, then today this procedure is available almost everywhere.

Demand spawned supply, and many companies launched their microchips on the market, which may not be readable by standard scanning devices. “Gray” transponders imported without documents, licenses and technical support are not registered in databases, either international or national. Accordingly, chipping a dog with such a device does not bring any benefit.

Experience chipping dogs in Europe confirmed the effectiveness of the procedure. Therefore, chipping is quickly replacing the practice of branding.
