Chow Chow

Chow-chow is a dog-bear from China with a very charismatic character. It is the representative of one of the most ancient breeds. Owners of such pets speak in one voice - the chow-chow is a very difficult dog, requiring a special approach. But if the contact is established, then the dog will be a faithful and loyal friend, an alert guard and companion.

Origin of the breed

Scientists conducted a series of DNA tests and found out an amazing thing - dogs of this breed were among the first to evolve from their wild ancestors - wolves. It happened in the Chinese and Mongolian steppes. A little later, the Chows were used as guards, sled dogs, in hunting and reindeer herding. The thoroughbred breed was supported by Buddhist monks, they were engaged in their breeding and recorded the data, which can be called a pedigree book. Chow Chow

The blood was refreshed, but used for this purpose by producers from other monasteries. The author of the first description of the dogs of this breed, who came to the territory of Europe, was a traveler from Italy, Marco Polo. Due to the fact that China for a long time was in voluntary isolation, the dogs of this breed penetrated into European countries only in the 30s of the 19th century.

Modern chow-chow - the result of painstaking selection work of the British, they made the dogs more decorative, although the working qualities were preserved.

Description of the breed chow-chow

Representatives of this breed have a well-balanced body, the appearance of a lion, they are majestic and all their appearance show that they are proud of their appearance and have a sense of dignity. A special sign of the breed is the language of purple and an interesting gait - the dog seems to be moving on stilts.

According to the standard, a thoroughbred pet should look like this:

  • The head of the chow-chow is large, with a flat, well-filled skull under the eyes and with a slightly pronounced transition from the frontal lobe to the muzzle. The dog's lobe is large, broad, almost always pigmented in black. In dogs with a white or pale shade of woolly cover, its light coloration is allowed, and dogs of blue and red color are natural. The muzzle is wide, and does not sharpen to the lobe, as in many breeds, the lips and the sky are painted blue-black. The preferred color of the gums is black.
  • Jaws are strong, with healthy, white teeth forming a regular, scissor bite.
  • Eyes small, oval in shape, with a dark iris. Ears of medium size, fleshy, with rounded ends, are in a standing position. Their setting gives the dog a somewhat unfriendly appearance.
  • The back is short, straight, passes into a strong loin. The thorax is wide, powerful, with arched but not barrel-shaped ribs.
  • The tail , placed high, will be thrown on the back.
  • Forelegs straight, with muscular, oblique shoulders. The hind legs are characterized by well developed musculature. Paws for the "cat type" - small, rounded, stand on the fingers.

The dog has a peculiar "stilted" gait, a short, shallow step. In long-haired Chow Chow, the coat is rather long, slightly rough, differs in density and uniformity, the undercoat is plentiful, soft and fluffy. On the neck, the hair is elongated, it forms a rich collar, the same is observed on the limbs, forming ample pants in the dog. In the short-haired species of the breed, the woolly covering is short, thick, plush, the outer hair is straight, not adhering to the skin.

In total, there are 5 types of coat color:

  • Red. Varies from dark shades of mahogany to light golden-red tones with white markings in the tail, limbs and neck area. Puppies with a red color appear in the light with a mouse-brown fur and often with a dark mask. With the growth of the dog, the mask disappears. red chow chow
  • The black. Most dogs with a similar color are monotonous. However, less often there is a wool of silvery hue in the tail or trousers. In dogs that are kept in outdoor conditions, the coat can discolour and acquire a chocolate shade, this phenomenon is called "rust". But experts warn that there is no single chocolate color in dogs of this breed. black chow chow
  • Cream. In most cases, it is a shade of ivory, very close to dairy and even white. But with age, in some individuals, it can darken to yellow-brown halftones. Representatives of this color are rarely exhibited, as their nose lining with age from black turns to brown, and this is a disqualifying sign. chow-chow color cream
  • Blue. The coat is gray-steel in color, silver shades are possible. Tones range from dark gray-blue to light bluish silver. In individuals with this color there is a mask of "salt with pepper" color, since there are also wool on the limbs. This is the only species of Chow Chow where the black nose is not mandatory, however, brown color is not allowed. blue chow-chow
  • Tsimt. The color of wool, which is difficult to describe, but the English call it murugim. There are several of its variations - from light beige tones, with an admixture of gray or pink, to dark shades that do not reach the intensity to red. In dogs with a similar color, there is a mask of "pepper and salt" on the muzzle. chow chow color

The ability of representatives of this breed to change the color of the wool with age, at times, is misleading inexperienced dog breeders who incorrectly estimate the color of pets. In this case, it is recommended to seek the advice of experienced breeders.

Nature of the breed

If we talk briefly about the nature of the Chow Chow, they are independent, rather arrogant dogs, possessing an innate distrust of strangers. They are so confident in themselves and like to dominate, that they do not much favor other dogs and often display aggression against them. To smooth out such traits of character, it is necessary to engage in the education of a pet from an early age.

Most often in the family, the dog himself assigns a master, whom he will listen to later, but this is provided that a person can show that he is the leader in the family. To the rest, the dog will show friendliness, but no more. Chow-chow is not a nanny, it's indifferent to children, but it will not allow them to mock you.

The pet will be more obedient and complaisant, if more often it is loaded with physical and intellectual loads. Activity of this breed is not very different, in addition, if other dogs meet the owners with unrestrained enthusiasm, then the Chow can only wiggle their tail a couple of times and continue their interrupted occupation.

Chow-chow have a habit of choosing their place in the house on their own and changing it periodically. This allows them to observe everything that happens in the house. Such a pet is not empty-handed, and if he has already cast a vote, then there is a good reason for this. Communication of children with chow-chow should occur under the supervision of adults, the dog can be trusted to adolescents from 14-15 years old, but not earlier.

The pet never imposes his company, in this matter he is extremely delicate, but can "pity" the owner if he is upset. If the dog growls, then, most likely, he is dissatisfied with something, and when the situation is reverse, you can hear a bearish muttering. A puppy of this breed can be led by people who do not lead an active lifestyle, since the chow-chow does not need long, too active paddock.

Features   training

Already from the description of the character it can be seen that with the training of the chow-chow can arise difficulties, this is confirmed by the owners' testimonials. Yes, the dog without a special hunt performs tasks, but before that can some time to think. And if he still decides to execute the command, he does everything slowly, before he sighed heavily. Many mistakenly attribute this to laziness or stupidity of dogs, but it's all about their obstinacy.

It is important to teach the pet "good" manners from an early age and get him to learn a set of basic commands. It is important not to lose enthusiasm and consistently solve the problems of educating a new member of the family. If at least once the master waved his hand and forgave the dog disobedience or failure to complete the assignment, the dog will use his advantage to the maximum and assume the role of leader.

To prevent this from happening, you need to show your superiority even in small things. Only the owner can choose the route of the walk, first go into any door, the first to eat. It should be borne in mind that once the dogs of this breed had to solve a number of tasks independently, so they would never blindly execute the team without thinking it over. Therefore, it is necessary to show patience. However, having comprehended and fulfilled the task, the dog will have a learned skill for life. chow-chow on a beautiful background

The cynologists recommend taking the chow-chow to the house at the puppy age, this will allow correcting his behavior. But the adult dog can not be re-educated. Specialists do not advise you to be rude when training a pet, this will significantly worsen the relationship with a four-legged friend.

Chow-chow care

Necessary care requires a coat of thoroughbred dogs. To ensure that the fur looks well-groomed and does not fall into lumps, 2-3 times a month carefully comb it out using a massage brush with stiff bristles. Chow-chow are not big fans of water, so do not climb into puddles and ponds, as a result of which they do not often get dirty. Bathe them seldom, always in warm water and using special detergents.

Dogs are shed standard - every six months - in the spring and autumn, and given their rich fur coat, this process proceeds quite intensively. To the apartment was as little as possible wool, in these periods it is better to comb the pet more often. Claws of the Chow are soft and require regular circumcision every 3-4 weeks. The ears should be inspected weekly, but cleaned with a hygienic napkin no more than once a month.

Chow-chow are suitable for both street and home content, and, the first option is preferable. Yet the dog is not small and needs a spacious room or patio. In the hot summer period, you need to take care of a place where the dog could escape from the sun, avoiding sun and heat stroke.

Even if the dog is kept on the street, he still needs regular walks every day. In addition, it is necessary to periodically release the pet from the leash in a safe place, so that he will frolic, especially if it's a house dog.

How to feed a dog

Having decided to start a chow-chow, future owners should know that the representatives of this breed are slopes to food allergies. So, choosing a diet can be quite complicated. Experts warn that the owner should decide whether this is natural feeding or ready-made diets, but in no case is a mixed food.

When choosing dry food, you should give preference only to premium and super premium brands. They do not contain harmful components or low-quality ingredients that are derived from wastes from meat production.

If the owner prefers natural products, then the basis of the Chow Chow diet should be meat - beef, veal, turkey, boiled by-products. It is also important that the dog receives fiber, contained in plant foods - cereals, vegetables. You can cook rice, buckwheat porridge, adding at the end of cooking meat ingredients and flavoring with vegetable oil.

Vegetables - cabbage, zucchini, carrots, greens, sweet peppers, lettuce give both in raw and boiled form. Still dogs need sour-milk products that do not contain artificial additives and sugar - curd, kefir, yogurt, yogurt. Such food allows normalizing the work of the gastrointestinal tract and replenishing the lack of trace elements. With any type of food, care should be taken that the pet has round the clock access to clean drinking water, especially if the dog eats dry food.
