The breed originated on the border between the two countries - Scotland and England, in the Cheviot Hills. This area consists of a chain of hills that are included in the Northumberland National Park. The Anglo-Scottish border is called Border Country, hence the breed.
As for the first mentioning of the border terrier, it was found in the publication "Dogs of the British Isles", released in the 70s of the 19th century. Also, these dogs are depicted in the picture, which captures moments of hunting aristocrat with a pack of dogs.
In 1920, the breed received recognition from the English Kennel Club, at the same time a club of fans of these small, tireless dogs appeared. At home, border terriers are popular and successfully participate in hunting. In other countries, they are not so common, and more often act as pets of the family than working dogs.
Description of breed border terrier
When you first see a doggie of this breed, you might be surprised, but is this dog really a hunter? After all, it has a small size and quite pretty, decorative appearance. But this appearance is deceptive: the dog is very hardy, active, mobile.
Otherwise he would not be able to keep up with a pack of hounds, horses. After a long movement, he would not have the strength to dig, dive into a manhole, and in the fight to seize prey.
The height of these miniature dogs does not exceed 34 cm at the withers, this applies to individuals of both sexes, the males weigh 5.9-7 kg, the females weigh 5.2-6.4 kg. The standard gives the following description of the border terrier:
- The head is small, flat, with a wide, sloping forehead and a smooth transition to the bridge of the nose. It is shaped like an otter's head.
- The muzzle is shorter than the line of the forehead, there is an ornament in the form of a neat beard, the nose is straight and wide. The muzzle also has tight eye sockets and cheeks, black, moderately thick lips that cover the lower jaw, but do not hang down.
- Teeth - set in a close range, with special power canines and incisors. Bite like "scissors" or "ticks".
- The nose is proportional, black is preferred. A dark brown coloration is allowed, but only if it is in harmony with the color and does not introduce disharmony into the general view.
- Eyes - set wide apart, almond-shaped, without bulge. Iris is a dark brown shade, preference is given to almost black tones. Look attentive, interested, alert, with a lively glitter. Eyebrows are mobile, which provides more expressive facial expressions.
- Ears - small in the form of triangles, hang down on the cartilage, fit on the sides of the head.
- Body - strong, with a harmonious addition. The neck is proportional, moderately elongated, covered with lean muscles, there is a small, smooth bend, withers and nape are well visible.
- The back is wide, goes into muscular lower back and croup. The sternum is narrow, of medium depth, with ribs well stretched to the side of the tail.
- The line of the abdomen is almost a straight line, moderately tucked up.
- Limbs - elongated, with straight legs and elbows, arranged parallel to the body. Back - straight, with strong, but not large articular joints, rounded brushes, gathered in a ball and pads, covered with dense, thick skin. The terrier moves freely.
- Tail - is located quite high, medium size, thick and strong, tapers towards the end. It is carried at the level of the back or slightly higher. The presence of bends and twisting of the "donut" type is not allowed.
Coat and possible colors
In purebred specimens, the fur may be reddish, blue and tan, light brown in color with gray. The outer hair is dense, hard, there is a mustache and beard on the muzzle, the undercoat is not very thick.
The standard is quite strict - even a slight deviation from such signs is accepted as a defect.
Character and temper Border Terriers
Dogs of this breed are cheerful, active, cheerful. They have high intelligence and very carefully monitor the mood of the owner. They make wonderful family pets, they get on well with children. Together with them it turns out very positive, but noisy company, they can play for hours.
Borders are friendly and sociable, and at the same time they are overly brave and fearless. The dog is very sensitive to the emerging threat and is always ready to stand up to protect his family, and he will not pay attention to the number and size of offenders.
Such a pet is always happy to accompany the owner anywhere - he is happy to go jogging, walking, the sports field and responds with pleasure to the invitation to play.
Border terriers have the appearance of lapdogs, but, unlike them, they have a stable psyche. In any situation, the pet will not become hysterical, will be assembled and ready to act according to circumstances.
Owners should remember that we are talking about a working dog with pronounced hunting instincts. So, keeping such a pet with other pets can be very problematic.
Even a well-bred dog may one day break off and chase another comrade-footed companion, even if they have lived together since childhood. But with their own kind boarders quite successfully coexist.
The owner during the runs must be more than closely follow his active friend. A dog may suddenly jerk for a bird, a cat or a rodent, so it is highly not recommended to let him off the leash.
Borders are terriers, but more often they do not have a penchant for pugnacity than the latter often sin. Although scandalous individuals are among them, this is rather an exception. Having met the fellow, the pet will react quite loyally.
In Europe, many members of this breed found a slightly different vocation than hunting. These positive dogs are taken to hospices, hospitals, nursing homes, so that they communicate with the guests. Cheerful and active doggies positively affect the mood of people, improve their mental state.
Humble little dogs do not differ, they are always not averse to stay in the center of attention, show their talents and get admiring glances and approval. It is recommended to bring such milahs to noisy, friendly families, with children and older people. The dog will not be frightened by any sensation and din, moreover, he will be happy to participate in universal commotion.
The Border Terrier is far from a homebody, he will not lie down on the couch for days. Whenever possible, the dog will be happy to go for a walk. If you send a child and doggie for a walk, for example, to the local territory, then there will be no limit to the happiness of both.
Pet is not inclined to impose, but loves to be close to the owner. Such a dog is very hard to be alone, and it is not at all suitable for keeping on a chain. Without regular communication and attention from family members, a dog may not only be bored, but also become vicious.
If the owner wants to make a similar four-legged friend, but does not have plenty of free time to study with him, experts advise immediately to take two dogs to the house or to provide the pet with free access to the yard so that the dog can walk as much as he pleases.
It is important to begin to engage in the socialization of a puppy earlier, you can drive him to crowded places, introduce you to guests and other dogs. In this case, the dog will adequately relate to children, animals, strangers. A good guard from a border terrier is unlikely to succeed. He is not very developed vigilance and suspicion, the dog is more often friendly and curious about outsiders.
Representatives of this breed are quite loud animals. But their barking is more welcome or joyful than aggressive or cautionary.
Education and training
Borders are not deprived of intelligence, but they grow up more slowly than dogs of most breeds. In addition, like other terriers, they are not devoid of natural stubbornness. When training should be taken into account, such a dog is very sensitive and does not tolerate rough handling.
He sensitively catches changes in intonations and sharply reacts to a touch. Delicate stroking, approving words can calm and cheer up a pet. Border terriers react very strongly to extraneous noises. From puppyhood it is recommended to teach him to different sounds.
The loud barking that these little dogs need while working may become a problem in everyday life. This nuance should be paid special attention and teach him to bark exclusively on command.
To educate and train a puppy of this breed can be from the first days of its appearance in the house. Do not think that this kid is not able to learn, on the contrary, the sooner you deal with it, the more stable results can be achieved.
To make the process more successful, it is desirable to conduct classes in a playful way. This inquisitive and intelligent dog will definitely be included in the action. It is not recommended to overload the pet, a short training games for the first time will be quite enough.
The basic program is quite easy for the boarders; in addition, they are excellent hunters and athletes, in both cases having success.
How to care for a dog
Pets of this breed are quite unpretentious. Their hard fur is subjected to regular trimming - hand-plucked dead hair is pulled out, giving the opportunity to grow a new coat of wool. Of course, even without this procedure, they fade out, but then one cannot avoid falling out hair in the house.
In addition, every 2-3 days should brush your pet with a suitable brush. But a haircut Border Terrier will not benefit. After it, the structure of the wool is broken, so that it will be restored, it will take quite a long period.
It should be every day to inspect the eyes and ears of a dog. It is advisable to do it immediately after walking or hunting. Dogs love to be worn in the grass and thickets, which significantly increases the risk of picking up a tick or other parasite. If necessary, the dog’s eyes can be cleaned with a cotton swab dipped in boiled water, and the ears with a cotton swab with baby oil.
To make the teeth of the animal white, you need to brush them 3-4 times a week with a special brush with paste, and for preventive purposes treat your pet with soft cartilage. The claws of these dogs are cut once every 4-5 weeks.
With good care, nutrition and providing the necessary load, the pet will be able to maintain health and live up to 14-15 years.
Border terriers are a breed that was formed practically without human intervention, which provided its representatives with good health. Their wool is able to protect from low temperatures, so the dog is not prone to colds.
Dogs are injured not often, but even if this happens, the lesions on the skin heal in a short time. And thanks to good immunity, their body successfully suppresses infectious pathogens.
However, these “sturdy” can be detected disease:
- cataract in young animals;
- retinal atrophy in a progressive form;
- epilepsy in puppies or spike syndrome;
- ataxia in newborn offspring;
- identical in males;
- allergic manifestations.
It is recommended to vaccinate the pet in time, after having done de-worming.
Feeding features of the border terrier
Terriers are almost omnivorous, moreover, they are true gluttons. Therefore, the owner should carefully monitor the fact that and in what quantity his pet eats. It is recommended to feed the dog 3-4 times a day, but in small portions. This will eliminate the stretching of the stomach and will not allow the active dog to gain excess weight.
Up to 12 weeks it is recommended to feed with natural food and only then introduce dry rations, having previously soaked the granules with water or milk.
In the case of such able-bodied and energetic dogs, it is very difficult to control the energy value of the products when it comes to natural feeding. Therefore, experienced breeders and breeders prefer to feed their wards only with ready-made rations or choose a mixed type of food.
Content little doggie
Such a pet can live well in the apartment, and in a country house. But in the latter case, it is easier to provide the necessary physical activity, letting go for walks into the yard. If the dog lives in the apartment, then he will have to walk with him more often and longer, so that he can completely squander the accumulated "boiling" energy in him.
The dog should be provided with a separate resting place, away from heating devices and drafts. Conveniently, the dog will rest on a mattress, sun bed, many owners will equip their pets with special houses.
