History of breed origin

Dogo Argentina can boast of outstanding origin. Back in the 16th century, mastiff dogs appeared on Argentine lands. After that, the process of assimilation of breeds began, which, ultimately, led to the birth of a new breed - the Dogo of Argentina.

We must pay tribute to the university professor and avid dog breeder Antonio Nores Martinez, who made a great contribution to the breeding of this breed. At the end of the XIX beginning of the XX centuries there was a period of unprecedented popularity of dog fights. Among the "fighters", the white mastiff, originally from Spain, who was also called the white fighting dog of Cordoba, stood out especially. Although Martinez was not a fan of such entertainment, he nevertheless considered the potential in these infinitely bold and powerful dogs. It was then that he decided to create animals of a new format - strong, fearless, with a stable psyche and a wide range of applications - from hunting for big game, to living with his family.

The professor has done tremendous work in selecting dogs suitable for breeding. And as a result, the Cordoban and Bordeaux dogs , German boxers , Irish wolfhounds , bulldogs, white mountain Pyrenees dogs, bull terriers participated in the creation of the new breed.

It was only possible to form the breed by the middle of the 20th century, at the same time a document and a document with the first standard were released. Already in 1964, the Great Dane of Argentina received international recognition, and to this day not a single breed from Argentina has been able to achieve such results. Is it any wonder that this animal is a symbol of the country.

Its characteristics exceeded all expectations - such a brave hunter, with unprecedented self-control still to search. Today the Argentinean dog is used not only for hunting, but also as a companion, service dog, and also a guide for the blind.

Characteristics of the Argentine Mastiff

Appearance of the Argentine Mastiff

The breed standard has been amended several times, the latter in 2012. If you describe the general appearance, then this is a proportional animal with an athletic article and very prominent muscles. He has a rather voluminous head and strong, powerful jaws, which can guarantee a grip that cannot be released. The bites of the Argentinean dogs greatly injure the tissue.

Despite a certain size, giants are practically not found among representatives of this breed.

The skin of the Argentinean dog is dense, thick, elastic, not hiding an impressive muscular frame. According to the standard, dogs should have a pure white coat, but a small dark spot is allowed in the muzzle. The coat itself is thick, short.

Judging by the physique, these dogs are real athletes. Adult males reach 68 cm at the withers and weigh up to 45 kg, the height of the females varies from 60 to 65 cm, and body weight is from 38 to 43 kg.

According to the generally accepted standard, the Argentinean is as follows:

  • The head, although it looks quite large, is still proportional to the body. The muzzle of the Argentines is snub-nosed, if you look in profile, then convex-concave outlines are noticeable.
  • The eyes have an almond-shaped incision and can only be of two colors - brown or black.
  • The neck is powerful, muscular, has a convex scruff.
  • The tail has a decent thickness and length, hangs along the body.
  • In dogs of this breed, black pigmentation is observed on a wide nose and dense, thick lips .
  • The ears are small in size, in a cropped form, have a standing shape in the form of a triangle. Uncropped ears are wide, medium in length, rounded at the ends. They are covered with a coat that is much shorter than the one on the body. Earlier, ear cupping was a mandatory procedure, but today it is done only at the request of the owners. Many European countries have banned this operation and even the participation of dogs with cropped ears at exhibitions. The ears are white in color, but the standard gives some relief - a slight black pigmentation is allowed, but provided that it does not spoil the aesthetics of the animal.

Having received the appearance of fighting breeds, the Dogo of Argentina, first of all, is a hunting dog. To do this, he has all the qualities - he is hardy, has a quick reaction and swiftness in his movements, his stamina is enough for a long pursuit of game, and the jaws have a truly "dead" grip.

Locals call this breed "Dogo Argentino" and are used to bully large animals in the pack. If we talk about hunting successes, then the Argentine alone can cope with a huge cougar weighing 100 kilograms.

Despite the participation in the origin of the breed of fighting dogs, the Dogo of Argentina itself was never used in this area. And in most cases they are kind, friendly dogs. Of course, there are exceptions, among the representatives of this breed there are individuals with a characteristic tendency to dominate. But special education can correct this behavior. These dogs are extremely quick-witted and therefore very easy to train.

It should be noted that due to their formidable appearance and the presence of fighting "relatives", these dogs were banned for keeping in some countries - England (although this country is considered the birthplace of dog fighting and many fighting breeds came from here), Ireland, New Zealand, Australia.

The nature of the Argentinean Great Dane

If we talk about the discrepancy of appearance and character, then this is fully consistent with this breed. Harsh on the outside, in fact, the Dogo Argentino is a very cheerful and positive dog. This is also confirmed by the numerous positive reviews of people who have such a four-legged friend in the family.

If you discard the prejudices that a powerful dog is necessarily an evil dog and evaluate the dog objectively, it turns out that this is a smart creature, and in addition, an intelligent and good-natured one.

Among his positive qualities, it can be noted that he always thinks before action, for no reason does not use force and does not bark just like that. In hunting, he is courageous like a lion, in the family he is infinitely devoted. He can get along with other pets, but only outside of his territory. Therefore, in order to avoid misunderstandings, it is still better to use a leash when walking.

But keeping the Argentine dog and other animals in the house will not work, as the dog still has both a hunting instinct and a sense of dominance. It is great for all family members, including children. It lacks a tendency to manifest jealousy.

It is best to keep such a large pet in a house with a large territory where the dog could move freely. But he can quite comfortably accommodate in the apartment, only in this case you need to give the animal daily physical activity.

If in appearance it seems that the representative of this breed can be a merciless killer, in reality this can only happen if the owner treats the dog rudely, with beatings, hunger strikes and other cruel methods of education, or in purposeful dragging of a pet per person. But such methods work on other peace-loving dog breeds, with much less physical superiority.

With the right approach, during training it is sometimes enough to apply only a strict tone. If the dog feels a positive attitude towards himself, sees care, he will grow up to be a good and faithful friend.

Due to the expressed sense of dominance, even at the age of sixty it is necessary to show firmness and show the baby who is the boss in the house. Otherwise, the dog will successfully assign this role to itself.

In order for the dog to be socialized, you can drive it around the city, carry it by public transport, or go outdoors. This will help the puppy of the Argentine Great Dane to get used to the surrounding world and its other inhabitants, and also will not allow aggression to develop.

Dogs of Argentina are very smart, smart. It is enough to give a command once and they almost immediately understand what they want from them. Therefore, if a pet has completed the command correctly two or three times, do not get it with the same request. It is better to repeat the study the next time. As in the training of other breeds, in this case you will need an individual approach and patience.

Caring for a dog of this breed

As already mentioned, Argentines can live both in the house and in the apartment, and most importantly, as often as possible, take their free time with active fun, training and just walking. They love games with a variety of equipment, including not averse to running after the ball. On a fenced area near the house there are fewer problems - a pet released to the site can independently “let off steam”.

If you do not do this, the dog can find for itself what to do with itself and the owners will not always like these activities. As for leaving, the short hair of Argentines is not very demanding. It is enough to remove dead hair during seasonal molting using a special brush made of rubber.

Dog claws need to be cut short and it is recommended to do this regularly. Eyes are washed at least once a week, at the same time you can pay attention to the ears and clean them. Dogs of Argentina do not need frequent bathing , they need to be washed only in case of heavy pollution.

The Argentinean himself does not react to various temperature changes, including cooling. But they are not suitable for enclosure, as they are prone to colds .

Feed the dog is required mainly meat, and it must be given raw, offal can also be included in the diet, but only boiled.

Vegetables and greens should be on the menu for dogs, with the exception of potatoes, fresh cabbage and sweet potato. It is necessary to salt the food to Argentinean dogs.

Argentines can be given porridge, boiled vermicelli, only in limited quantities, without turning into the main food. But dairy products can be given daily.
